In computers, a slot, also called an input/output device or I/O port, is an electronically-manufactured system for adding capacity to a personal computer in the form of input/output connections (usually, in the range of 8 to 64 evenly-spaced holes for plugging and unplugging cable connections). Slots can be implemented in different ways. For instance, the most widely-known form of slot is a punched-in jack socket, which has been used for a long time on computers and other devices for supplying I/O ports. It consists of a metallic body with several holes punched into it at prearranged intervals to form I/O ports. The modern type of slot is made using a metal obelisk or column that is pushed or pulled into a punched hole in a substrate.
Computer slots come in many forms and are designed to serve different purposes. For instance, a user may want a slot to provide I/O ports for connecting the keyboard to the computer. Alternatively, a slot can be designed to receive a CD-ROM drive, for storing information that needs to be read quickly. Or a slot could be designed to support a mouse, for controlling a mouse or other electronic device using the computer’s keyboard and mouse buttons.
These days, computer manufacturers have started to provide additional I/O slots – either on the motherboard or inside a slot card. A slot card is a removable card, generally made from plastic, which is inserted into a slot and is usually controlled using a MMC or serial bus interface. Motherboards sometimes include extra slots – these are generally referred to as PCI slots – to add external devices like printers, scanners and others.
When designing a computer system, it is advisable to choose a slot that will provide the minimum number of I/O ports. That is, the slot should not contain devices that may require additional connections or are too heavy to fit into the available slots. In this way, the total number of I/O ports that the computer has will be minimized. Additionally, it is better to avoid slot sizes that might be too small to fit certain types of computers or devices.

It is also important to select a slot that can accommodate the future expansion of the computer system. If the number of available slots decreases in the future, it may be necessary to add new slots – if you are working with a computer that uses a fixed configuration, adding a slot at a later date may be cost-prohibitive. Also, it may not be practical to add an already existing slot to an already crowded computer system.
Computer systems normally come with preinstalled slots – it is up to the user to choose which of these they most need and install the slots they need. However, there are sometimes a number of different slots that might be needed for a given computer system. In this case, the user may consider purchasing additional slots – this is a simple matter of looking at the system’s manual to determine how many extra slots it requires. Most computers have at least one slot for each type of device that might be installed – the user simply needs to determine which slot they need and plug it in.
